Hi all, great forum so I thought I had to join up and get involved.
I've just started with a DE safety razor after 10+ years using an electric shaver. Before the electric I was using mach 3s and always has terrible problems with irritation.
After reading many great articles on here about razors, blades, soaps and brushes I purchased my first DE etc.
I'm using a Merkur 34c, Edwin Jagger Best Badger brush, Proraso white pre shave and Proraso white shave soap.
Looking for some advice please!
I've been trying to follow techniques described on the forum about holding the razor, letting the weight do the work and blade angle, but I am having terrible problems with skin irritation (razor burn). I know everyone claims to have sensitive skin, but I am really fair skinned with a coarse beard and have always had issues.
Process I'm following is:
1. Hot shower and exfoliate
2. Apply Proraso pre-shave
3. Lather up in shaving bowl (careful to get a good lather and peaks)
4. Apply lather and shave only WTG with a shallow angle of maybe 45 degrees
5. Use short strokes and rinse shaver often in hot water
6. Apply the proraso pre/post shave cream
I've tried both the Feather blade (felt scratchy against my skin) and the Derby hoping for a milder blade but it caused even more irritation.
Do you think I should try a different blade? Is the feather too agressive and the Derby too mild? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help!
