Inspired by a recent thread, I dropped the beans on a kamisori on that notorious auction site. I had used non-folding straights before, including a badly abused kamisori that someone had tried to hone symmetrical and a couple of kamisori profile symmetrical Gold Dollar conversions, but this was my first real kamisori in its original intended form. Came shave-ready, which is a first for me. I have never had a "shave ready" ebay blade that I didn't need to at least do a touchup on, but this one shaved nice. The first shave went quite well. I just had to remember to keep the narrow side bevel on the strop on the away stroke.
I'm not exactly a convert, because I think I will still generally prefer a regular folding western style straight, but this thing will see at least some use. So, I need to know how to hone it. I was hoping some of you kamisori guys would post your honing routines. No, I am not going to buy any Jnats... i will still be using my trusty film, or sometimes my Naniwa progression, and pasted balsa. Hopefully I can maintain with just the diamond on balsa, like I do my folding straights. But your actual methods, feedback cues, half lap ratios, etc would be of great interest. I know there are a bunch of ways to get to an edge and I dont want to start a fight between 3/1 and 7/2 guys, but a variety of methods and details that have been successful would be of great interest.
