I've given up fighting the urge and bought a Fatip Grande in black nickel. The QC is better than I had been expecting; it's not going to be mistaken for a Muhle but it's more than acceptable. It's a nice little razor.
However, the top cap is different from every Fatip I have seen in photographs. It's much wider and closely resembles the top cap on my Merkur 38C. Blade exposure much reduced, being is similar to the 38C and the blade gap looks to be smaller as well. The blade sits very close to the comb. On the plus side though: alignment is perfect every time and there is no sign of the distortions that plagued the original top cap. I suspect it may be the top cap used on the Fatip Gentile range of razors.
I have found a few old threads where changing top caps is discussed and the consensus is that it makes the razor milder. As I have never used a Fatip before I can't tell what, if any, difference this top cap has on the shave aggression and efficiency. Should I be looking for one with the original top cap if I want the true Fatip experience?
