I bought this recently on the auction site, entirely for the Gillette/Rubberset brush, but the case and the SR are both very pleasant surprises. The SR dates to 1909 and after a bath in Goddard's Liquid Silver Polish, it is without doubt the best SR I have. The case has me puzzled, though.
I'm using one of the auction photos because my camera won't do justice to what I'm trying to describe - a 3-tone case. And I was hoping the listing pix were just too dark to see an outline of a Gillette logo in the headliner, but with it now in hand there is nothing on the case that would identify it as a Gillette. The headliner is padded and if it's not original, it's a damn good repair. All said, it looks exactly like the case for a Combination Set #461 except for no logo in the headliner and the 3 colors of leather.
The upper half of the case is a deep burgundy/cordovan and made of 2 pieces - a band around the side panels and a separate piece on the top. The side panels of the bottom half are a rich brown, while the bottom panel is black leather. Very thin black leather runs up the back side of the case and acts as the hinge, and I'm convinced it's original because it is laid on top of the brown and cordovan of the bottom and upper shells, but it is tucked under the cordovan piece on top of the lid.
Any ideas? Who would have been making cases back in the day without any branding?
