Sounds like lather is dissipating in your brush while it sits between passes. In my experience, hair knots, boar and badger will do this when it's time for a cleaning. Nothing like a 5 minute soak in a apple cider vinegar / water / glycerin bath to get soap and water residue out of a knot.
I never run into that problem with a synthetic brush.
