Personally, I use either my ED face-washing soap, leaving its lather on for a few minutes, or Noxzema. Either way, I hold a hot moist towel on it for a minute or so, then face-lather with my shaving soap du jour, and shave on! I'm not sure if it helps, but it's part of my ritual, and it certainly does no harm.
Also...I've read about professional barbers using either Noxzema or their shave soap as a pre-shave, with hot towel.
