JA Henckles Twin Works Graef & Schmidt Ivory Set

Hi Guys,

Crossing my fingers on this one, an Ebay find that USPS just delivered. The box is in pretty rough shape, its a leather bound push button with nothing remaining visible in terms of a name or logo in the top of bottom. Inside is line in blue with the faint remains of J.A Henckles Twin Works with the logo in between in gold lettering.

There are 7 straights, no numbering and no days of the week on the top of the spines. Each tang is stamped 14, Twin works logo, J.A. Henckels Solingen, Germany with Graef & Schmidt on the reverse side. Bottom jimps on all and unbroken ivory scales!

I did a quick search on Graef & Schmidt and found them to be an American Import firm with active dates of either 1923-1943 or 1883-1952.

Heres the good, 5 out of 7 blades are free of pitting and cracks. All the ivory is genuine and unbroken. The blades are bright with some staining and no rust. All 7 razors have good tension, but one is off a bit on the centering and will catch if not careful.

The bad: I have two blades with edge pitting and some moderate hone wear that lines up with the pitting areas. This pitting does not show cracks above it under my loop, but who knows? Two blades also have some iridescent coloration that looks like they have been heated and maybe effected the temper. One wedge seems to be a bit loose and can stick out the bottom, it seems to rotate on the pin, but shows no cracking.

Here's the shocker, I snagged this all for $204.95. I think this might have been one heck of a deal, but that depends on the 4 blades with issues, two with pitting and two discolored.

My question, if this is the deal I think it is, should I invest the money in having professional restoration done? Can pitting on the blade edges be restored without removing the scales? Given the fragile nature of ivory I certainly don't want to attempt any unpinning myself. I have experimented with polishing up some cheap vintage Ebay finds myself following the sticky found above, but I'd be nervous to try it on these razors. In the event I decide to resell the set should I have the restoration done or leave it up to the next buyer?

Thanks in advance for your input guys!
