Back story: Shaved with electric for years. Got tired of them breaking and got paranoid that one would break mid shave and cut my throat open. Switched to manual (Gillette fusion 5 blade pro glide whatever the entire name of it is). Awesome shave and got to be quicker than using the electric after only using it for 3-4 months. Had been thinking of going DE for long before that.
Current story: Got my DE razor last week (EJ DE89) that included a 5 pack of derbys. Read some stuff online and watched videos that told me to let the weight of the razor do the work, don't put too much pressure or you will cut your face off. So, I did that on my first shave. No hair came off. Very discouraged. Next day, after drinking whiskey, decided to man up and put on the pressure. Went WTG and got a decent shave. Immediately went ATG after and it was actually way more pleasant than the cartridge razor, and a smoother shave in my problem areas. Only one nick near my adams apple, and barely bled. Felt very good overall for only shaving with a DE a second time.
Now to the point. Tonight I tried to shave the same but decided to go XTG before going ATG. Skin is very irritated after the XTG pass to the point that I decided to stop right there. The shave is disappointing without the ATG pass. Is this typical? Do some men only go XTG, some men go ATG, some men go all ways, etc? Or do I just need to work my technique?
BTW, I've ordered a proper brush and a sample pack of blades from west coast shaving. They haven't arrived yet. So I've some experimenting to do but I'm mostly wondering if I need to master shaving in all directions to get a perfect shave or if some guys get a perfect shave without going all directions.
