I survived my first attempt with an open comb razor with no nicks or weepers! For those of you with more experience, my excitement may seem to be a bit excessive. But for other newbies like me, it is a great confirmation of how applying information from B&B and taking your time can really pay off.
I have only been DE shaving for a few months, and I love the historical aspect of vintage razors. So when I received a 1930's ball end NEW in the mail yesterday, I had to put aside my Tech and give it a try.
Set-up: 1930's ball end Gillette NEW loaded with Red Personna blade (a Feather didn't seem like a good idea for the first attempt)
Prep: Somerset Pre-Shave Oil
Bowl Lather: Omega boar brush with TOBS Avocado Shaving Cream
Post: Thayer's Lavender Witch Hazel and Nivea Sensitive Skin Aftershave balm
Granted, I wasn't trying for a BBS on the first try. I mainly wanted to see if I could get a decent shave using only WTG & XTG strokes while leaving my skin intact.
Impression: I had to play with angles a bit, but I managed to get the hang of it fairly quickly. You definately don't need to use pressure to get results. It seemed as if the combs allowed the shaving cream to work more effectively, but that may just be my imagination. I will definately add the NEW to my rotation. Once I am more comfortable with the technique, I'll experiment with other blades to find the most match.
Thanks B&B members for all your advice and encouragement!
