I started shaving in the early 1960's using a good old Gillette SS and Foamy. I did this through college and 4 years in Uncle Sam's Army. (I did use Old Spice Shaving Soap etc while in college, it was cool then.) After the Army, kept wet shaving but when de blades became scarce, I switched to the multi blades. Still used the Old Spice soap and mug, and then in the late '80's used the Gillette shaving cream-brush/cream cartridge system for the few years it was available. It actually worked pretty well. Too bad it had a short-lived existence. I went back to the multi-blades and shave gel. In the very late 90's I went electric. Let's just say it worked. In the long run it was cheaper than multi-blades.
Earlier this year I started developing irritation and lousy shaves with the electric. I tried some multi-blades again but couldn't get a decent shave. Especially on the neck and had a lot of irritation.
I started lurking around here and elsewhere on the internet, and though, let's go back to old school. I dugout my 1971 Gillette Black handle SS from when I was in the army, got a new Marvy mug and some sample blades. Started using Col. Conk, it's OK, and my old Eveready pure badger brush, The first 2 weeks was tough had some razor burn on the neck. But, it gradually went away until it rarely occurs.
I "splurged" in July and got a Semoge 2000 boar. Boy, is that a great brush especially for soaps and face lathering. The smell is gradually dissapating and feels great on the face. I did another self-birthday present for myself in August and ordered an Edwin Jagger Kelvin DE from Amazon. It finally came yesterday after having originally gotten lost in shipping. Amazon's customer service was great and got a replacement to me at no extra charge in 2 days. I used it today with one of the Darby blades that came with it. It did a better job than the SS with the same blade. I may have a new daily shaver.
I would like to thank all the contributors to this excellent forum for the information and insights they've provided me.
