Howdy! 1st DE razors and wet shaves

First of all, I'd like to say howdy to everyone! My name's Jeff and I'm brand new to all of this. Oh, I've been a lurker for a while and I've been soaking up info from around the web, but I'm finally checking in here because I wanted to share what I've learned. So far, I've found out a couple of things the hard way, but that's not to say I haven't had fun with it :001_smile I hope this will be informative for some and that everyone will find at least a bit of humor in my experiences :biggrin1:

So, how did I come to own a safety razor and DE blades? Well, I started off in high school with a Gillette Mach 3 which became triple circular electric after quite a few years. The electric was a gift and was OK for the most part. While it had its problems, it was certainly less expensive over time than a cartridge razor! Well, lately, that electric has gotten worse. If I let my beard grow out too far, I have to spend a long time using the detail trimmer to get the overall beard down to a level the circular blades can deal with. If I try to shave on a daily basis, my beard can be too short for it to work. If my beard is in the Goldilocks region of long enough but not too long, there are still issues. I'll get irritation, ingrown hairs, and there are some parts of my face it just doesn't seem like it will ever cut the hair! So, with the electric I spend a long time to get a shave that's nowhere near good, but it doesn't cost much if anything per shave.

I finally got fed up and looked at my options. I still have a couple of cartridge handles, but when I looked at prices for the cartridges, I just about fell over! It's not only that I don't want to pay what they want. I literally can't afford it! I'm on unemployment and looking for a job and money is really tight.

It dawned on me that I might want to look into a DE safety razor. After lots of research, I ordered what I thought was a Weishi from eBay and I also ordered a blade sampler package. It was only after I'd placed the orders that I found out I goofed. The blade sampler was still good, but the razor itself was actually a Nanjie. There were mixed reviews, so I figured I'd give it a try.

Before my razor showed up, I looked around town for some locally available DE blades in case the razor showed up before the blade sampler. One store had a 10 pack of what I recognize from various descriptions as Personna blades for $12.49. Family Dollar had 5 for $1. I bought a pack to be on the safe side.

My razor finally showed up on Monday and let's just say I was less than impressed.

Here are a couple of edge-on views of my razor when it first showed up:

Here are a couple of end views:

As you can see, both guard bars were a bit tweaked. I didn't know Nanjie made a slant

One last pic as there's a limit of five per post. Here's my razor in its case:
