Hello fellow shaving enthusiasts!
I'm proud to announce that I built my own custom shaving brush and I would like to share my creation with the world *evil laughter* . I initial purchased my own custom made brush from a seller on eBay. Sadly, the knot was defective and was shedding about 2 months later. I saw sad. Because I really liked having something different. To get me by, I did buy a replacement Omega boar brush and I do like it. I always think having more brush is good because it will give time for your items to fully dry if you are a daily shaver. But I digress.
Since I really loved the handle from my custom made eBay brush. I was looking at techniques to remove the defective knot. In my search I found tutorials on how to glue a brush and where to get good knots and handles, etc.
I came across this gem on eBay: Olivewood Shaving Brush Handle
The seller is here : Olivewood2000
Well, my internet research then let me to The Golden Nib to get my shaving brush. I chose a standard silvertip knot.
I DID have to do some creative work to get the brush height right. The hole that was drilled into my handle was quite deep. I had to use coins (US quarters in this case) as spacers to get the brush height to my liking. I actually had to use 5 amazingly.
To hold all of this together I chose good ol J B Weld standard epoxy. I started with a layer in the bottom and then placed a coin. Then I added another layer and placed another coin. Basically I sandwiched J B Weld and coins until it was time to place the knot. I probably used way too much epoxy but I wanted something that would last and stay put. My knot was a pretty snug fit so I didn't have much excess come out because it mostly got smushed and rubbed down into the handle. To be cautious, I let it set for about 18 hours before I ran a small amount of water through the brush to get a (feel) for my shave to come. Honestly, I just couldn't wait to see how the brush felt in action. I'm going to let it set for a few more days before I actually use it on its first shave. It's just going to sit in a safe place where it can't tease me.
Pictured below is the end result!! I would love to hear about your own custom shaving brush adventures.
