What was traditionally used before finishing on a thuri?

OK, now I've got my dirty little mitts on a couple of thuris, I'd like to know what people used back in the day before going to the thuri for finishing.

Any one?

I know a lot of you guys like cotis before the thuri but was there a German equivalent?
