I posted two stones earlier to get help with id and it was extremely helpful. This places kicks butt with knowledgeable folks.
So.... I figured I would push it again and post this large 8" x 3.25" natural stone I came across. It belonged to a Japanese barber in a town near where I live. This guy passed away in 1992 and was apparently in his early 90's. The family came over from Japan in the 40s'.
Of course I realize this stone doesn't need to have come from Japan - but it has obviously a lot of use on it. There are craploads of scratches on the sides from taking the bite off of either razor corners or perhaps knife points. There was obvious slurry in the scratches on the side as well. It is a very smooth stone, similar to a swaty but the surface is not very hard and is relatively easy to scratch.
I am just wondering if it is immediately recognizable to anyone or if it will remain a mystery. Unfortunately, I cannot comment on how it is as a finisher as I am still humbly (after far too long already :001_rolle) learning sharpening and unable to say how well the stone works. I am hopeful that I can consider it a finishing stone. (I am sticking with nortons at this point until I can improve.)
