So I tried my first DE shave today. I loaded my Mercur 34C with the blade it came with (a Mercur Super), and soaked my Semogue 1800 in hot water. I attempted to lather up from SCS Sandalwood soap, and went through the pre-shave prep described by Kyle in his thread. I probably could have gotten the towel hotter, and left it on longer, but I was eager to try my new toys out. I did a 2-pass WTG shave, and probably got a SAS, maybe even a CCS, with only 2 weepers. I had been worried that I was going to cut my face off, so I was thrilled and stopped after the second WTG pass. Finished off with a cold water rinse and Dove for Men post-shave balm. I do have a little bit of irritation, especially on my upper lip. So, a few things that could have gone better:
1) Lather - All I did was soak the brush, then squeeze it out, give it a couple shakes, and start rubbing it over the soap. Eventually added a little water to the top of the soap, but wasn't real impressed with my results. The lather seemed thin, and while the razor glided over it nicely, it felt almost sticky afterwards. Have reviewed a couple threads here, and I think I need to work a lot on my lather building technique, maybe start using a bowl. Any ideas?
2) Closeness - would it be a bad idea for me to try going WTG, then ATG, as a beginner? I don't want to change too many things at once, but I feel like I could probably get a better shave than the one I had today. I still don't want to end up gushing blood all over, but have accepted that I'm going to cut myself from time to time.
Overall, happy with the results, looking forward to improving.
