Hello everyone,
I wanted to start this new thread on custom shaving brushes, as I wasn't getting any prompt replies on my inquiries is other threads in this category. Here's my situation:
I do a lot of custom work on my wood lathe for both myself and anyone who requests I make something for them. I make a ton of stuff out of a huge variety of woods, including exotic hardwoods. I have been researching custom made badger hair knots and I want to give it a go. I have the perfect wood in mind to use for my handle (curl leaf mountain mahogany). I do have a few questions before I get started however:
1) Where is the best place to buy my badger knot? My first thought was and still is The Golden Nib. Their prices are very reasonable and there is a large variety of knots. I would also consider Whipped Dog but TGN seems to fit my selection desire better.
2) I don't have a large face so I wanted to get some input on the size of knot to get. I think I'm using an 18 mm right now and I want to get something a little bigger (I was thinking either 22 or 24 mm).
3) I have heard that silvertip badger hair has the most density and holds heat the best. I enjoy warm/hot lather so this was my first thought. Is this true of the silvertip or is there something better?
4) On TGN, is there really that big of a difference between the silvertip standard and the silvertip premium knots to warrant the extra bills or is it a marketing stunt? I understand marketing but let's be honest, it mostly comes from China so it's likely all the same.
Lastly) Which type/size of badger hair will give me the best lathering consistency (based on my proficiency of course) with a shaving cream? I use primarily creams but sometimes I like to combine creams and soaps. The 28 mm finest F2 looks really dense on TGN but that is a very large/tall knot right?

Anyways gents, I just wanted to get some recommendations/input on this. When I finally make the decision and make the brush, I'll post the pictures, you are all in for a treat! Thanks for everyone's time!
