Back in October I decided that after dealing with disposable and electric razors for my entire adult life that perhaps DE shaving was the solution to eliminating razor irritation and all of the other problems associated to multi-blade disposables as well as electric razors as well. I visited Merz Apothecary in Chicago and planned in getting a Merkur with the Barber Pole handle or a similar razor in another brand. They were out of all of them so I settled on a EJ DE89 with a Smooth Handle. I also bought a blade sampler as well a Simpson S1 Best, a brush stand and some Razorock shave soap and balm, and a styptic pencil.
the first shave was OK but I did cut myself in a few places. A few shaves later I changed to a different blade and it was a little better. I decided I wanted an Ikon 5 Set and tried the straight bar head and really didn't improve on the shaves...still getting a few cuts every time.
A few weeks ago I happened to watch one of the videos on DE shaving and started out with a fresh blade. I really don't think I was doing anything differently but for the first time had a shave with no nicks, cuts or irritation. Instead of waiting to shave every two or three days I shaved every day and haven't had a problem since. I even used the same blade 5 times. Finally DE has become enjoyable and the goal has been achieved.
i think one thing I noticed was that I'm letting the weight of the razor control the pressure. Not forcing anything more helped. And I found the angle to tilt the razor at. Those two things helped the most.
Can't wait to try out the Fatboy that I bought from another member that should be in the mail no later than Monday. I'm away for the weekend so it may already be there but I hope to be shaving with it on Tuesday.
