I am definitely new when it comes to wet shaving. I just wanted to make this thread to share what I've learned so far and say how my most recent shave went. I want to start by saying I haven't actually used a DE yet, but plan to use one in a few weeks (I'm taking baby steps). I have started to use a badger brush and shaving cream though, and can say it is a step up from canned goo that I've used for so long. I have also started to shave post-shower oppose to pre-shower which is what I've always done in the past (and it seems to be helping). I also make sure I trim my beard if I haven't shaved in over say a week.
My most recent shave was really good in terms of very little to no irritation, probably the first time ever I've gotten ZERO irritation on my neck!!! After browsing the forums for about 2 months now I've definitely learned a lot. 1 very important thing people new to wet shaving should pay close attention to is beard growth direction. In the past I always assumed my beard grew straight down (meaning I would always shave straight down to shave with the grain). But I just recently realized that the hair on my neck grows in a few different directions. By simply feeling your beard you can figure out which direction your beard grows in. I found out that I've actually been shaving against the grain in certain areas of my neck and is why I have always gotten irritation on my neck in the past. The last couple of shaves I've had, I've payed close attention to shaving with the grain, in my case I would have to change the direction of my strokes in certain areas, and it has made a world of a difference! I've been using a 2 blade razor (which I plan on only using when I'm in a rush in the future). Mapping your beard is a very important thing to look at that seems to get overlooked a little. Once you master your beard growth direction, trust me when I say, your shaves will definitely improve!
Cheers,
Justin
