So are you OCD about it, let the cake build, hit and miss, or only when the pipe becomes foul? Initially I wanted to build up cake, but then I got so many pipes that I only smoke occasionally that cake building just wasn't going to happen. I'm definitely not the OCD type, more prone to neglect, but not to the point of a pipe going rancid. I usually pass a few pipe cleaners through the stem and call it good, even if the last one is not absolutely pristine. But really I'm all over the place....
