I don't use pencils a lot, but I recently acquired an inexpensive Waterman fountain pen/pencil set from the 50's advertised for school use. (Set TX-298 if you're keeping track). The pencil actually came with lead in it, so that got me thinking about mechanical pencils generally.
I keep a supply of sharpened pencils in a cup on my desk, but all of the lead seems awfully faint when I write with it, so I don't know why I bother. [Were our #2 school pencils like that? My imagination has them darker.]. Same with this mechanical pencil's lead. My eyes are old and struggle to see what has been produced by my hand. I'd like to like pencils again, but this business of watery looking writing is inhibiting.
Are there soft leads that naturally write nice and dark, or am I jaded beyond redemption by the dark lines of ink that pens create? Is a black line beyond my reasonable hopes?
