I recently asked about Maggard's V3. I was comparing the Maggard razor to the EJ89, which was the competitor to the Merkur 34C I passed onto my 18 year old (I would still like to get another 34C, as it was an excellent razor).
I have never used an EJ89, but have heard great reviews. I received the razor today, and was excited to open it. If you asked me six months ago if I would be excited about anything to do with shaving, I would have thought you were nuts. I am starting to think I am, in fact, nuts. Anyhow, the razor head is extremely well made and the handle is excellent. It is a great weight, although I had wanted the MR11 handle, and will probably get it in the future.
First, customer service. I was highly impressed with the personal and professional service I received from Maggard. I received multiple responses to my questions (some of which were probably not the brightest) from Brad and a personal response from Cassie after the order. They made me an instant fan of Maggard Razors.
Now the razor. The head is well made. I don't see any issues with the machining and it looks fantastic. The handle is also excellent. It is easy to grip and didn't slip with soap on my hands.
The shave. It was more aggressive than I remember the Merkur 34C to be, which is neither good nor bad. Since I have never used an EJ89, I can't compare it to that particular razor. I probably would prefer the 34C, but the razor gave an excellent shave. I used TOBS Sandalwood and a Gillette 7 O'clock green. I took it easy and was able to get a smooth, BBS shave. I had one small nick, as I tried to go against the grain from the adams apple to the chin.
Bottom line, I highly recommend Maggard Razors. The current V3 is well made and extremely affordable.
