Hello everyone + some questions.

Hi everyone, I am new to both the forums and wet shaving, and thoroughly enjoying it so far. I have a couple of questions and it would be great if people could share their opinions!

My girlfriend bought me an Edwin Jagger DE89 for Christmas after I had previously complained about the irritation and poor results I get from cartridge razors. I am 5 shaves in and starting to get the hang of it. I currently get about the same level of irritation from wet shaving as I would from a cartridge, although the shave is much closer and more enjoyable. I think the irritation comes from inexperience and perhaps not having found the perfect blade.

One thing I have noticed is that I get bad razor burn if I shave with the grain on my neck. The hair on my neck grows down from my chin then outwards on either side, however, I get considerably less irritation (especially on the first pass) if I shave upwards, which is against/across the grain. This contradicts everything I've read so far, saying I should start by shaving with the grain. I have used cartridge razors since I started shaving, and have always shaved upwards on my neck (because that's how I got the closest shave) so I think that could be a factor?

So I guess my question is if anyone else has also found that shaving with the grain to start with is not the best option for them, and also if there's any reason why I should be shaving with the grain if it doesn't give the best results for me i.e is it it just what generally works best for most, or is there specific reasons?

Also, does anyone know of a good place to get a sample pack containing a wide variety of different blades? I'm in the UK. Everything I've found so far is just smaller packs with just 4 or 5 brands, and pretty much every one has either Astra or Derby blades in them so not much variety.

Sorry for such a long first post!

Cheers all!
