I've been wetshaving for over a year now using a brush and I love it. Just recently I discovered Cremo brushless shave cream and I also love it. I think I can make a case that anyone new to wet shaving should start with Cremo (or a brushless shave cream):
1. You don't need to invest in a brush. Getting a good brush can be daunting and expensive. Learning how to use it properly (or at least knowing when the lather is correct) took me quite a while.
2. (more importantly) by using your fingers to rub in the cream you learn your face's grain map intimately. I can't overstate the importance of this for getting excellent shaves. It wasn't until using Cremo that I realized the reason I can't get rid of redness on part of my neck is I had gotten my grain map wrong. It was actually different (and very strange) on that one section of my neck. I might not have noticed this had I not been using a brushless shave cream. I thought all this time my neck was very sensitive and that was creating the redness.
I do think there are benefits to using a brush (the calming experience, the exfoliating of the skin), but I do spend more time if I use a brush vs Cremo. I save about 5 minutes using Cremo because I'm not building lather and cleaning hardware after the shave.
That's my two cents :)
