Brush/Lather Help

Hello,

I’ve been wet shaving for about 5 months now. I started with a cheap EJ Pure Badger brush while I figured out if wet shaving was for me. I used it for 3 months and thoroughly disliked the scratchiness of the hairs. I’ve since upgraded to a Whipped Dog Silvertip brush (22mm knot, 48mm loft) which I’ve been using for 2 months and has felt like rubbing fluffy clouds on my face.

The issue that I’m having is the silvertip doesn’t create lather as well as the pure and I can’t figure out why. I was reminded of this when I traveled recently and decided to take the pure badger brush to not risk damaging my silvertip. I used it on my Barrister & Mann soap and it loaded in a fraction of the time, created shave ready lather in a fraction of the time and overall just seems to be doing more with less product.

Here is the lather prep I follow with both brushes:

- Soak the brush in a cup filled with water to just below the brush handle for 1-2 minutes.
- Give the brush 2-3 good shakes.
- Start loading the brush on the soap. Rotating between swirling clockwise and counter clockwise adding water as needed.
- Finish by creating lather in a bowl.

I’ll use Barrister & Mann as my example as it has been my favourite soap, but this also occurs with Proraso soap. The pure badger will load within 5-10 seconds, whereas the silvertip takes 45-60 seconds to properly load. The pure will also create a shave ready, 3+ pass lather in under a minute whereas the silvertip takes 2-4 minutes and seems to require more product. I started “blooming” the soap which helped a bit with the silvertip, but I noticed that I’m very quickly eating through the soap and have stopped doing so.

The longer load/lather times wouldn’t bother me as much if it produced the same quality of lather with the bonus of a softer application. But I feel that the lather has been overall better with the pure and my soaps last longer, which is the opposite of what I hear should be the case. I’m at a complete loss as to why this is. Is it the soft tips, density, backbone...?
