I decided a few days ago to jump into the deep end and get a JNAT. This really is the deep end for me, as it is the first stone of any type I have owned. Up to this point, I have only used lapping film, and am still on the learning curve with that! I thought, for now anyway, I would use the films as I have been doing, and use the JNAT for refining the edge before stropping. Ok, then...
I have only experimented with the stone a couple of times at this point, but I have had an issue I wanted to get some advice on. Both times I have tried to hone the razor pictured, I have had the following experience: every 10 to 15 strokes or so, the blade will "scrape" on the stone in one spot. It does not seem to be the same spot on the razor (or stone) each time. It feels (to someone with very little experience) like it is dragging a tiny piece of grit over the stone, leaving a scratch mark. Then the next bunch of strokes are perfectly smooth.
I'm confused by it! I would love to know if anyone has an idea what might be going on...
Some extra info -
- this is a razor that I have honed myself, from bevel to finished edge. It shaves well, but as I said above, I am not an expert with the lapping films, so the razor's edge itself could be less than perfect. I have a few pro honed blades, but have not yet put them to this stone. But I figured if the razor shaves well, the edge must be good...
- I have lapped the stone, both times I've experimented with it, using a diamond plate. I have used the slurry from the lapping to hone, diluting it as I go until it is just water on the stone. At this point, I do not have a nagura stone.
- I am not using much pressure, and the one in 15 or so passes that result in the drag/scratch thing are not the result of a harder or unbalanced stroke.
Any ideas, honing B&Bers?
