Questions about grit progression.

Hey folks. I was hoping to get some information on honing. I have never honed a razor, and would like to know what grit jumps are acceptable. I've seen tutorials that say to establish the edge on a 1000 grit stone, then refine it with a series of jumps from 4000, to 8000, and finish on 10 or 12,000. Strops and pastes come after. My questions regarding this are: are those jumps too big? Looks like a 4000+ grit jump between grits. Should more grits be incorporated? Also, at what point do you feel that it becomes an effort of diminishing returns? 12,000? 20,000? Higher?

Also, I see reference to Coticules and Thuringian. I realize that there are finishing stones, but what is the difference?

I can imagine that these questions have been asked before and extensively detailed, so please be patient with me as I bumble through this. Thanks for any help that can be given.
