As I have recently mentioned in another post, we have currently more whales in our waters than you can shake a stick at. Here are some shots from Pacifica, taking this early evening.
Typical spout, maybe a mile out:
Near the shore, in not too-windy conditions, a flock of seagulls always betrays the whale's presence. Just keep your eyes on the frantic seagulls and eventually the whale will surface for air. The seagulls feast on the leftovers that escape the whale's mouth
The whale got pretty close to the pier on which I stood:
The animal is the size of a bus and is an impressive sight. Check out the blowhole:
You can see the fallen in the partially open mouth. The whale fills his mouth with water, then drains the water. All the little fish, krill, copepods and plankton get stuck in the baleen. The whale then licks with his huge tongue the baleen clean and swallows his meal:
