I would like to throw a challenge out to those who frequent the Fragrance Forum. Over the next week or two, try to post your thoughts on a fragrance of your choice. It can be something you try for the first time, or one of your all time favorite fragrances. You are welcome to post a long review, like the excellent posts Joel has been doing every Friday. However, even a brief description would be great; what notes you pick up, the reasons you like or dislike a fragrance, scents that are similar, the fragrances value, or what associations the fragrance elicits for you.
I'm interested in this for a couple of reasons. First of all, I'd like to learn what others like and get ideas about what I may want to try next. Secondly, I truly feel that those who write about fragrances will get a lot from the process of doing it.
I stated writing my impressions of fragrances after seeing others do it here at Badger and Blade. Putting down in words what the fragrances evoked for me changed how I experienced fragrances, and made a big impact on my enjoyment of them. The process of thinking about what I was smelling, then putting it to paper, made me appreciate the art of perfumery. It has also changed how I perceive what I wear, as I've improved my ability to pick out notes, and mentally compare one scent to another. I started by evaluating a handful of incense based fragrances; one a day over a week or so. Since then, I've tried to write at least a sentence or two on each new fragrance I've tried.
I put down a few lines today about Imaginary Authors' The Cobra and the Canary over in the Fragrance/Scent of the Day thread. I plan to wear Yesterday Haze tomorrow, and plan to comment on it as well.
To get things started, here are my thoughts on The Cobra and the Canary.
For me, the predominant note in TCTC was leather. After a bracing asphalt and lemon opening, lasting only several minutes, it settled into a soft, slightly sweet leather fragrance, with underlying tobacco and hay notes. It reminds me of a let her car interior on a hot day. I would recommend anyone who is a fan of leather fragrances get a sample and give it a try. I found it softer and more approachable than the aggressive and very masculine Knize Ten (and the nearly identical Xerjoff Homme). For those who want a pure, long lasting leather, Montale Oud Cuir d'Arabie may be a better choice. While I love OCDA , my wife preferred TCTC. Perhaps a closer match would be Christian Dior Leather Oud, which is my favorite leather fragrance. TCTC would be great for fans of LO who find the civet opening too animalic.
