Advice on buying vintage please

I am a complete newbie when it comes to traditional shaving, but having read all the advice on this forum have decided to purchase:

EJ 3D Diamond
Vintage Gillette Tech

So that I can see which provides me with the better shave.

Now my questions are:
1. What should I look for when buying vintage Gillettes - how can you spot a good one?
2. Are the 3 parts of a Tech interchangeable - can you swap ball end handles with fat boy etc. Regardless of year of manufacture.
3. If so is it worth buying a few really cheaply and cherry picking the best parts to make a razor to suit me.
