Georgetown Pottery Scuttle vs. Symmetrical Pottery Lather Bowl

I have been alternating between my GP-12 and the SP Lather Bowl for some time now and wanted to share my impressions of both.

GP-12: The 12 is about 1/3 smaller than the GP-20 and, therefore, easier to handle ($66 with shipping). I use my scuttle in the following manner. I run hot water into the sink and then fully submerge the scuttle in the sink. I toss my brush into the top of the scuttle and jump in the shower.

After my shower, I again run hot water. I drain the sink and scuttle and refill the scuttle with hot water and put the plug in. I keep the sink ½ filled with hot water and between passes, place the scuttle in the sink.

The scuttle has nice ridges to help whip up a nice lather and the lather stays warm being surrounded by a jacket of hot water. Believe me, a hot lather shave is a real treat and takes no more time.

Symmetrical Potter lather bowel: SP makes a great lather bowel in a variety of shapes and sizes (custom orders are welcome). I purchased a small ready-made bowel for $55.95 with shipping. These bowls are wide brimmed and the inside of the bowl are randomly placed nubs to help agitate the soap into a thick lather. It works great at doing just that. The thing I like best about this bowl is the handle on the bottom. It makes handling the bowl very easy without fear of it slipping from your hand.

I use the lather bowel the same way I do the scuttle except at the end. While I lather my face, I float the bowl in the sink filled with hot water. I have hot lather for each pass with the razor.

Summary: Given their prices these two shaving accessories are a luxury to be sure. Both function as designed very well, however, my recommendation is the SP Lather Bowl. I find it much easier to lather in the wider bowl rather than the steeper sided GP-12 lather bowl. The bowl is also lighter for easier handling. Both are very attractive and would make a nice addition to any den. Give it a try, hot lather will keep you coming back day after day!
