I think that I speak for many people on B&B when I say that wetshaving conjures up special father-son moments. My dad was born in 1922 and died far too early 27 years ago today. He was a very old-school kind-of-guy. Once he found something that he liked he stayed with it forever. We got a new Oldsmobile 98 every now and then. He would never hear of another make or model. He shaved with the very same Gillette New Long Comb for well over 40 years. He would never replace it despite the bent combs and corroded finish. Along with the razor were the Wilkinson Sword blades and Noxzema Brushless Shaving Cream. Every morning the house was filled with the strong menthol-Eucalytus scent of the Noxzema. Like so many of us, I learned to shave by emulating my dad. I learned a lot of things in life by emulating my dad.
I thought of something this morning that I hadn't thought of in years. My dad worked in the garment center in NY his entire adult life. Every day he would eat lunch at the same small coffee shop. Every day he would ask the very same waitress, the very same question: "Is the Tuna Fish fresh today?" Only after she said "yes" would he order a tuna sandwich on rye. As a rebellious teenager working at the store it would make me nuts to hear him ask the same question over and over again. As an adult I can look back on it and realize that my dad was a pretty simple, straightforward guy who didn't like change. In fact he found reassurance in stability and constancy. In so many ways the Gillette Long Comb tells the story of his life. Once he found something he liked, he stayed with it. He was loyal and honorable to a fault.
There is much for a son to learn from watching his father shave.
