Blackland Blackbird - polished stainless steel razor - interesting shave

Hi all,

Yesterday a package arrived in my mailbox from Blackland Razors. Inside was a small tin black tin box with a polished stainless steel Blackbird razor with a 70mm handle inside. The machine work and polishing are perfect, no tool marks or machining marks. A beautiful piece of machinery to behold and use. This morning, I dropped a PolSilver blade into the top, screwed the 70mm handle into the head (it locked up like a vault), and proceeded to take it for a test shave using L'Occitane Cade and face lathering.

Not to beat around the bush, but, this was easily the best shave I've ever had.

An interesting side note that I have already communicated to Shane the owner of Blackland Razors, is the tremendous amount of audible feedback you get from this razor when you are shaving with it. Unlike the normal 'scrape, scrape' sound one gets with a Merkur, the Blackland has an audible singing sound. When I communicated this to Shane, he indicated that this was a particular peculiarity feature of the polished models. I'm not an engineer, but I wonder if this singing quality is a testament to the tight lockup between the head and the handle. Also, there is a distinctive tactile feedback that comes through the handle when you are shaving as well that corresponds to the singing quality.

If I think about it some more, the experience with this razor reminded me of driving a Lotus Elise I have a few years ago, everything was communicated to the driver through the steering wheel and driver's seat. Many reviewers have commented upon the acute angle of the safety bar and how it has the feeling of a more aggressive razor. Again, I am no engineer, but I think the acute angle of the bar actually assists with the closeness of the shave by increasing the tension on the skin as the razor cuts the hair. I could be wrong, but, I think there is more to the Blackbird design than simple cosmetics. Perhaps Shane will elaborate on the engineering on his web site at some point.

Overall, I am very happy, Shane makes a superior product. I'd love to see some brush handles or bowls next. I'd certainly be a buyer.

tom.
