Usually a soap that rinses cleanly will not leave scent after your shave, and you can use anything you like.
Personally, I simply enjoy pairing an aftershave that I think compliments the smell from the soap, but I don't think it much matters five minutes after I have left the bathroom. It is just fun.
Do whatever you enjoy, and have fun with it.
