Having acquired both the tub soap and cream forms of this product and having used them, I now feel ready to cast my feelings about this much touted product.
First of all, let me give Tabac a hand for presentation. All 3 forms I have (stick, tub, and cream tube) have the best presentation of any product I've used to date. The stick comes in a reloadable container that is exactly what I'd like from all sticks. The tub is heavy ceramic, and even the plastic lid feels hefty. The tube is probably the least showy, but is still a nice metal tube with the same plastic as the tub lid for the cap.
I like the scent. I don't absolutely and categorically love it, but I like it all the same. A little on the strong side for my daily use.
The performance also impresses me on this one. If I had to compare it to another soap I'd put it somewhere between RazoRock and Stirling soaps, outdoing RazoRock by a hair and coming in just under Stirling by a hair. The margins are seriously close on this for me, almost not being significant enough to call.
The price is my only real sticking point. Even at the DEEP discount I paid ($8.50 for the 4.4oz tub and $4.24 for the 3.6oz tube w/free shipping), the price only barely matches Stirling ($9 for a 4.5oz refill) and is handily beaten by RazoRock ($5 to $10 for a 4.2oz tub). Now some people will argue that you get more shaves for your money with Tabac, but at the STANDARD retail price ($18 for a REFILL before shipping) I'm hard pressed to believe that. More than double the price? Seriously?
So is it worth the price and hype?
Hype: Absolutely. The presentation, scent quality, and overall performance are all some of the best experiences I've had.
Price: If you pay what I paid, get multiples. If you pay what most sellers think you should pay at full retail, I think not.
