Anybody else experienced this? I recently moved from just North of Phoenix further into the city and the water is very different. I had a softener before and have hard water now but I haven't really noticed any difficulty in lathering from the change. I have, however, found that different soaps perform differently in this home.
One major change is Mitchell's Wool Fat. In spite of hearing time and time again that soft water is better when lathering MWF, I have actually had much better luck with this soap in my new hard water. In fact, I've had some really negative experiences with MWF in the past but in the hard water at my new home it is now actually one of the best performing soaps I have.
In my old home, my favorite soaps were Saponificio Varesino and PannaCrema Nuavia. In my new water, both of these soaps seem less protective than before. I'm getting more irritation and nicks with them than before. Mike's is still performing great for me but doesn't feel quite as slick as it did in my softer water.
Tabac and Martin de Candre both perform exactly the same so the rules aren't really applying to these. Both of them are lathering up great and giving me top quality shaves just like before.
I have plenty more soaps to revisit to see how they perform in this water, but what is interesting to me is that the different water hasn't affected my shaves in the way I expected. Rather than simply making lathering more difficult, my soaps seem to lather the same as always except the lather I get from certain soaps just seems to be performing differently. The fact that Mitchell's in particular is finally giving me the fantastic shaves I've always heard it could from switching AWAY from soft water is a real surprise. It's actually been my go-to lately, having gone from being one of my worst soaps in my old soft water to one of my best soaps in hard water now.
