Hi there! this is my first post on the site so I apologize if this is in the wrong thread.
So I've been shaving for four or five years now. Over time I used the following razors in order: fusion pro glide, shick quattro, mach 3, random de razor, Gillette sensor excel 2 blade, and finally the plastic version of the sensor 2 blade disposables because I can't find the one with the metal handle any more.
Over time I found that it's way better to use fewer blades and after learning about wet shaving, I realized that 2 blade disposables are the best (and cheapest) option to find in any department store today.
The only double edge razor I have used was one that my dad picked up on a trip. He doesn't know much about de razors and he picked up a "HongLong" razor. It looks similar to the big roc and micro touch one razors. I didn't like the length (3.5" is too short) and it's too skinny (1/2"). In addition I think it's too light (don't know exact weight). I did like how I got a cleaner and comfortable shave though. I used derby blades to start with but switched to wilksonson sword which were okay but not sharp enough. I eventually stopped using it because the finish started to rust and the twist to open style made it hard to clean.
So I went back to two blade disposables and now after 1 year I'm ready to try again. My current set up is using the disposable razor with Gillette sensitive foam (best off the shelf lubricant). I tried williams mug shaving soap for a few weeks and it was good but eventually it started to dry out my skin. For the brush I use a wilkonson sword and I do a three pass shave. Afterward I use nivia after shave balm
I have a pretty thick beard and I shave every 3 days or so. I'd like to shave every two days but I end up with too much irritation. I've included a picture of my five day beard. The lighting doesn't do it justice, my hair grows coarse and close together. I took a neck shot as well but I look like a conehead so I didn't upload it LOL.
There are so many different de razors out there and I'm trying to figure out what will work for me. Open comb or closed? what handle material? what weight? blade loading style? adjustable or non adjustable? what kind of plating is good? what brands should I stick with? what blades are good?
*******
tl;dr I tried de shaving with a crappy razor, I learned the techniques and I need help picking a new de razor. Ideally I want to spend less than $100 on a razor, stand, cream, and brush. I live in Canada so 1/3 of my budget is going to end up in shipping costs. It can't be too short, must have grip, and must have enough weight to guide the blade.
I've been looking around and I'm liking chrome plated de razors. I'm thinking of going for the Merkur 34c or the longer handled Edwin Jagger diamond designed razors.
