Hey Guys. I got the bug recently to check out an old, gold Gillette DE that had belonged to my bride's grandfather. He passed away about 30 years ago. The razor looks to be in great shape and even had a matching gold blade box. I have no way of knowing what condition the razor is in but it looks very good and the mechanism is smooth. The unused, in the paper wrapper, blades about ripped my face off, though. Thirty year old blades? Not good no matter how 'unused" they are.
I've read I can send the razor off to Gillette to be worked over for a reasonable price. I'm also interested in finding a good sample pack of blades but the link on this site to vendors selling samples seems to be about seven or eight years old. Guidance to updated information is appreciated.
I'll be reading up and educating myself. I'd like to use this family heirloom razor but will need to select a lathering product, probably soap, as well as a brush. I'm not willing to go the connoisseur route while I'm a rookie so I'm not afraid to economize on a brush and soap but I want to select really good blades that will provide good shaves, last a while, and be economical. Is that dreaming?
I look forward to diving in and reading through the various topics in this forum.
Cheers!
