Dubl Duck Restoration for a Newbie

Hello Gents,

Newbie here. Been reading around the forum for a couple months. Decided to give straight razor shaving a shot; I ordered my first straight razor week before last. Gold dollar cheapie... Wanted to try it out and see if I liked straight razor shaving before springing for an expensive blade. The experience was terrible! I bought it "shave ready" off eBay and I believe that it was anything but. It did look like it had been touched up with a hone but when I tried to shave with it just drug across my face more pulling hairs out them "cutting" them. Fortunately I did not cut myself as I only tried my upper face and did not dare attempt shaving my neck.

Anyway… Long story short before throwing in the towel based on an $18 razor I decided that I would give it one more shot. Get a quality blade and have a professional get me set up. Just ordered a strop from well shaved gentlemen (ordered beginners strop also). After combing eBay for preowned vintage razors that were in good shape I fell in love with the Dubl Duck Wonderedge razor. After reading around on the form in finding out that it was a very desirable razor, I decided I would find one in decent shape and try to have a professional restore it and make it shave ready. I figure if I go this route I can at least get back most of the money I have invested.

My question is, is there someone out there who would be willing to help me get this razor to a point that I can give it (and straight razor shaving in general) an honest effort? FWIW I have $112 invested in the razor. I felt like that was "pretty fair" considering it's in "okay" shape already (no nics in blade, no pitting, etc). Pictures of the razor are below. PIF: 100 Russian blades

Not to be political, but Russia is invading the territory of some of my ancestors. I am appalled by that fact, and this is my small gesture of response.

There are many fine Russian blades, and these are among them.

Enter the PIF if you are in need of blades and if my sending you these would prevent or delay you from ordering a similar quantity of Russian blades. Yes, this is a mini-embargo.

85 Astra Superior Platinum

5 Astra Superior Stainless

5 Voshkod

5 Ladas

I will also put in an assortment of perfectly good blades manufactured in countries that are not presently invading Ukraine.

Hello

Hi everyone.

I've been following your forum for some time and decided to get into wetshaving. I hope i can learn a lot more than i already know. Since about March e changed do DE razors and soaps and since then i have come to enjoy shaving, as a result my wallet is starting to complain :biggrin1:.

I look forward to learning from all of you shaving gurus!!

Thanks for having me here!

Hello

Is the Blade comb or plate also a blade protector?

It seems if the plate is flipped over and reinstalled upside down it and the head prevent contact between the blade and most objects. Is this intentional?

Restoration/ honing inquiry

I am brand new to straight razors, B&B, and just acquired 3 razors. 2 are in the John Weiss set posted in the thread below. The third is a Dubl Duck Goldedge. I am looking for someone around Miami/upper Keys area who does restoration to talk about what I need to do. I am also considering using greaseless compound on them myself. However, as I've never done this, I would like to find out how difficult this would be. If anyone has any info/advice/suggestions, I would greatly appreciate some help. Thank you.

WTS: Maui Jim sunglasses, AG Russell knife, Futur, Proraso soap, Theyers, Ogallala AF

Thanks for viewing my post! Seems like I accumulated items which no longer get used and wife is not letting me spend more cash on new toys, so this is my first step in consolidation!

Shipping is CONUS only, all prices include shipping. Item #1 and #2 will ship UPS ground with insurance and tracker, other items will ship USPS, also with trackers. Payment is PAYPAL only. Please send me an IM if interested.

Item #1: Maui Jim sunglasses, come with original soft bag and case, $120.

Condition is excellent, Style Flexon, Model# Moana # 351-23, specs:

Lenses: Gloss Copper/HCL Bronze. Frame: Rectangle wrap. Eyes: 64, Bridge:18, Temple:130. Base curve: 8 base.

There are no visible scratches on inside or outside of the lenses. The only imperfections are, when you look at the inside of both lenses, at the very bottom or each lens there are tiny, even wear marks where the folded ear tips tuck and rub against the lens during storage. These areas are not scratches, it just looks like a tiny wear in the coating from inside. This imperfection cannot be seen while wearing them, since the spots are so low on the lenses and do not impede vision.

These are sold for $349 and are current models:

http://ift.tt/1rIeHIL

Item #2: A.G. Russell vintage stainless frame top lock, folding knife, 7" total length, $100.

Condition is mint. It has the original factory sharpened edge, never field sharpened, the knife is like new, there is no play in it, lock snaps and holds tight, like it should. If you look at it under a bright light, there might be light marks on the handle just from handling it over age but I do not see any scuff or scratch marks. Honestly it's so clean I never used it, it's too pretty, so I tend to use my Strider as a daily beater and this AG Russell sleeps in a drawer, wrapped in cloth with my other knifes. This is a hard to find collectors model, the only reference I currently found is from a RHETT STIDHAM estate sale on ebay, from his personal collection, going for $229 and the one on ebay has imperfections in it, mine does not, here is the ebay link (not my listing):

http://ift.tt/1nOaonW

Item #3: Merkur Futur, Polished Chrome DE razor, comes with original box and instructions, $55

Condition is excellent to mint. I'm the original owner, purchased it from Amazon in March 2014.

I used it less than 20 times, maybe a dozen or so. There are no scratches, the top might have a few tiny scuff marks from contact with a shaving bowl/scuttle, while it sits in hot water prior to shave. I currently have too many razors in my rotation and find that the handle on this model is slightly too long for my small hands, so this razor just sits there and hopefully can find a new home. It shaves flawlessly. The mechanism is tight, no alignment issues. As many on here know, this is a great modern adjustable. Last night I cleaned and disinfected it, then put it in it's original box, it is shave ready.

Item# 4, 5 & 6: sold as one lot combined, $20.

The 3 items below were purchased within the last few months, from WCS.

#4 - Proraso Red, shaving soap - Sandalwood - NEW (this is an extra tub I had, opened for pic only), 150ml tub.

#5 - Ogallala after shave - Bay Rum & Sandalwood - tested once (wife does not like the scent), 4oz bottle.

#6 - Thayers after shave - Cucumber Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera - tested once (I don't care for the scent), 12oz bottle.

I will start to load pictures in posts to come. I have more pics available upon request. First person to IM me who is ready to purchase gets first dibs.

I've not been a veteran member on B&B forum, so if anyone needs a security reference, please let me know as I'm also a member at other forums, going on 12 years at some with 100% sell/buy rating.

Thanks for looking!

What's your Magic Number?

I am now the proud owner of 3 adjustable razors and while I realize many of you adjust between passes I prefer to find my magic number then "set it and forget it"

Do you adjust between passes or prefer a specific setting and if so what are your "magic numbers?"

Guinness Blonde American Lager?

Hmmm, not sure what to think about this one.

0804_guinness_lager_970-630x420.jpg

You know Guinness for the darker side of life. Namely the nitro dry irish stout. In recent years, there have been different releases by the Irish brewery, but the most popular is undeniably the stout.

In August, the brewery is launching a new beer that is just a little out of character, Guinness Blonde American Lager. Yes, it’s brewed in the United States, with American hops.

A crisp, refreshing tasting beer with a rich, delicious flavor, brewed in America in the Guinness traditions known only to our master brewers with our famous Guinness yeast, and Mosaic and Willamette American hops.

A little investigation shows this beer being brewed by City Brewing Company, a contract brewery that operates three different locations in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee.

Guinness Blonde American Lager will be available in 12oz bottles and draft. Official announcement to follow.

Razor rotation?

Bear with me, as this will be one of many stupid questions I ask.

As I've been browsing the forum, I keep running upon mentions of "rotations" of razors that people use.

Is this something that has a practical use, or is it just a "variety is the spice of life" thing?

Are razors like cars?

Are razors like cars?

Famously, B&B member Bosse, turned down a free British Aristocrat #16 a few years ago. His thinking was essentially that British cars are rubbish (please use an appropriate English accent when reading this word!) while German cars are brilliant.

I knew in my heart that that beat up #16 was a better shaver than my Merkur, but I fell for the car analogy (Mercedes vs Austin) when I respectfully turned down the free offer.

Of course, Bosse eventually saw the error of his ways and picked up (more than) his fair share of gorgeous British Aristocrats. However, his car/razor analogy, which he ultimately dismisses, deserves further discussion.

The British Aristocrats, in my opinion, are a luxury item. So, the cars in this analogy should be luxury cars. For the English, Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls, and Aston Martin all jump to mind. For the Germans, we have Mercedes, BMW, and Audi.

We all know the British luxury razors. Are there any German contenders? I nominate the Rotbart pictured below (next to a British #16). Any other nominations? What about French luxury razors? Would that be Citroen and Peugeot?

Grandpas razors

so a couple of days ago I mentioned in another thread that I called my grandma and asked about my grandpa's razors. She said she still had them and was planning on throwing them away. I asked her to save them and I would take them and actually use them. Well here they are. I know nothing about vintage razors and am hoping for as much info as possible from the great people on this forum.

My grandfather was my hero he passed on in 2002 and I am so excited I get to use his razors. Grandma said that she believes one was issued by the US Navy. My grandfather was captain of a ship in the Korean war... maybe one of these was there after you all provide some info maybe we can determine if one of them were over there.

Now to the razors just an FYI they each had a razor in them.. Schick... both disposed of properly. Grandpa went blind in the 80s so these have not been used in a long time. The first looks the best and has a date code of O1

The second razor is a little beat up and has a date code of F3

Pictures on next post so to finish my questions:

1. Can they be cleaned?

2. If so how?

3. Would it be better to send them somewhere and get them professionally done?

These mean a LOT to me and I want to treat these with the respect they deserve.

My Diplomat Experience

I shaved today with a beautiful nearly mint Gillette Diplomat made in the 2nd quarter of 1956. I was curious after seeing a few posts regarding comparisons between Diplomats vs. Aristocrats vs. Fat Boys, etc. I must say, it provided me a very nice smooth and comfortable DFS. However like most vintage Gillette razors with the exception of old type open combs, it "isn't aggressive enough for me to use an an every day shaver". I did find the Diplomat more pleasant than my Fat Boy for some reason (maybe the full length knurling?) and it is certainly a brilliant thing to look at, but it will probably stay in the "collection" and not in the regular rotation.

Shave right away or let lather sit on face?

I came across this shaving article on WebMD where they had talked to a dermologist who says it is important to let the shave lather sit on your face for 2-3 minutes.

I am just starting to use shave cream (Proraso red) with my cartridge razor until my DE safety razor arrives but I haven't been letting it sit.

I usually just start shaving as soon as my face is lathered up.

Am I doing it wrong? Do most of you let the lather sit on your face for a few minutes?

After some evaluation of what I use and enjoy it is time for these three to find a new home:

1.Gillette Fatboy E3

2. Gillette Slim K1

3.Flair Tip Super Speed C1

All are in good working order, a little laziness in the doors, but well functioning. I just found that prefer non-adjustables, and that I prefer 40's super speeds to the flair tip.

i am interested in trading for:

Techs with cool handles

A good face lathery badger brush

We can talk about combinations and compensations, I have some unused packs of feathers, red personna, and I think a few more things laying around I can throw in. I may stick some prices on this if no trades are forthcoming, thanks for reading, pics to follow, contact for questions.

Badger Brush and Lathering Creams

I have been having trouble lathering a sample cream I received. It's Macca Root from the Body Shot.

I tried different bowls and I still get a very thin lather. I've added more cream and it seems to help.

I've had better luck with a boar brush.

My question is

Do you lather creams with a badger or boar brush?

With what brush do you have better results?

NEW - Long vs. Short - How to ID?

I know the answer is that one has short combs and the other long, but.......

Is there a few ways to tell in looking at the NEW if its a long or short comb? I have run across a few in person and when I check on ebay there are a number of NEW's that are not identified as either short or long comb. I did pick up a long comb NEW recently and posted the pic here on B&B ( which is how I identified it ) so I have some point of reference but have not seen a side by side comparison. I am looking to pick up a short comb soon and want to be knowledgable.

Leave-in conditioner.for grooming!

Guys,

Garnier "Fructis" makes a leave-in conditioner that I use to slick down my short, side parted haircut during the Summer months. It dries "stiff" but stays totally in place all day and it keep my hair in good condition! I was in a hurry a few years back and didn't have time to blow dry my hair and I had applied this to my hair and just left it like that! I liked it so I do it when I don't have any time and it works well! Has anyone else ever tried this?

David

Greetings from NC!

Hello everyone! I am new to the forum, and new to the practice of using creams, soaps, brushes and DE razors! I have wet shaved with canned creams and whatever razors were on sale at the local Walmart for over 30 years! I have entered into this on the advice of a friend who told me that shaving didn't have to be the dreaded chore that I made it to be. So far he has been correct! I must say that, I am completely overwhelmed at all of the different products available to increase the experience! I look forward to learning from all of you sage shavers out there, and be ready because I have a plethora of question!!

Greetings from NC!

Hello!

I've been reading posts on B&B for quite awhile now, but I figured I should finally introduce myself and share my story (which is probably similar to a lot of others).

About 2 years ago, I randomly stopped in an Art of Shaving store in the mall, and ended up getting their starter kit with a brush. I instantly noticed a difference in my shave. I started looking more into wet shaving and got more and more fed up with the "mainstream" shaving crap, but I decided to wait until I had depleted my small stockpile of Mach 3 blades before upgrading to a safety razor (which lasted a lot longer than it should have because I don't have to shave every day and I grew out my beard for awhile). About 6 months ago, I finally picked up my first, a Edwin Jagger DE89L, got a sampler pack of blades, and I'm never looking back! I may have nicked myself a few times while getting the hang of it, but I have so much less irritation and I can get a much closer shave than I ever could before.

I'm still very much a newbie, but I've been learning a ton from all of you as I slowly delve deeper and deeper into making the daily routine more of a hobby and less of a chore. I already have my eye on some new (read: better) brushes and I'm always looking to improve my technique. Thanks for having me here!

Hello!

Anyone use an aggressive razor daily?

I know a lot of people like the option of a super aggressive razor every now and then but does anyone use an aggressive razor daily? I see lots of mention of having to be careful and slow with them. Razors like the R41, Futur, ATT H1, etc.

Anyone use an aggressive razor daily?

An introduction

Hey fellows, I have been lurking around the site for a while. It seemed all my Google searches of all things blade and all things badger brought me here at some point. So I decided to join. It made a lot of sense considering how much time I spend shaving, talking about shaving, and thinking about shaving. But here's the thing; I have a full beard and a handlebar moustache. That's right, I'm a head shaver. But I practice the same old school wet shaving methods I see so many practicing so passionately here. I may be in the minority here, but there are so many things we can all share in common.

Right now my razor is a cheap colonel conk safety razor. It does the job and while I feel I will one day upgrade, that day is not today. My blades are feather new hi-stainless, no complaints. My soap is D. R. Harris Marlborough. Very nice, but it's new and I'm still getting used to lathering it. To be fair I'm getting used to lathering period. Before that I used Van Der Hagen briefly, and before that Jack Black triple cushion. Before that I didn't shave. I have a pure badger brush and a boar's hair brush. I haven't used the boar's hair, it came with the Van Der Hagen, and I think I want a Silvertip brush. Time will tell.

So that's me. Hoping to get to know some of you, or at least add as much to the community as I have already taken.

Big Antique Show HELP!

Twice a year, Spring and Fall, there's a big antique show near me, the next one is Sep 6 and 7. I went to the one in the Spring looking for DE's and found a lot of straights. I didn't know much about DE's at the time and knew nothing about straights. Now I know more about DE's and still nothing about straights. I'm hoping in the next week you gentlemen can enlighten me on what I might look for in a vintage straight, remember I know nothing about straights. Thanks for any help you can offer, it may benefit you as I haven't started using straights yet so anything I find may end up on BST.

Shave bowl antique repurposing?

Questions for any who may have repurposed an antique for shaving purposes. What all have you used? A chamber pot is out of the question. I know what those things were. Also an antique mortar and pestle scares me. Saw some very nice old brass ones at a place but they had residue at the bottom. What did the grind in late 19th to early 20th century? Brushing opium, digitalis, aspirin, and Thorazine into my face sounds unsound. What have you guys found and had success with?

i am always looking for a nice Old Spice mug. But those are rare and usually beat up or over priced. No such thing as a big coffee mug back then. That was more of a 1980-1990's thing. Thought?

Off spring choice to teach how to shave

I let my daughter watch me shave one day, I think she was in her early to mid teens. She watched as if she was trying to learn something and then she said you should've had a son so you could teach him how to shave. I told her I got what I wanted and wouldn't change a thing. I let her feel my face after I shave and she tells me when I have a smooth shave and where I had some not so smooth areas. She doesn't like facial hair. It's nice to know she can appreciate a good shave.

Off spring choice to teach how to shave

So if you could only have one straight.

What would it be? I'm looking for some inspiration:001_cool:

So if you could only have one straight.

New Watanabe blades

A decent knife is half the work in the kitchen.

I have been using Watanabe’s santoku, gyoto, nakkiri and petty knives with great pleasure, and this summer seemed the perfect moment to ask Mr Shinichi to make me two less common knives.

After some research and quite a few mails discussing the topic, we decided on a Sabaki and a Negikiri.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1409480588.795801.jpg

The sabaki is180mm, is made in blue steel and its handle is made of chestnut wood. The handle is octagon shaped with a buffalo horn ferrule.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1409480518.940024.jpg

The sabaki is as I understood an angular boning knife. Sabaki just means butchery or meat breakdown (says zknives.com), and it is used for separating meat from bones. It is a strong and sturdy knife, used to cut meat away from the bone, but not for cutting through bones.

This sabaki is immensely sharp; it cut through its box when I layer it down for the picture. I am very pleased with it. At 18 cm, is is manoeuvrable yet a noticeable size. It will take away some of the heavier work from my santoku.

Upon browsing Watanabes site (it is kind of hybrid these days, with the old charming site gradually being replaced by a new, more flashy site ) I found this large nakkiri style knife.

It turned out to be an ‘east style‘ kurouchi higashigata negikiri, negikiri being a dedicated long onion cutting knife. It is a less common type of nakkiri. I had never heard of it, and had to use some google-fu to learn more about it, and still am curious to learn if there is a western style also.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1409480544.500105.jpg

A big, black hammered 240mm blue steel, with the same chestnut handle that I have on all my Watanabe knives. If I recall correctly, higashigata refers to the square point on the knife.

It is an interesting knife to say the least. Big as it is, my gf has been able to produce near perfect julienne rettich with ease. I have only sliced a couple of shallots with it, and it is a pleasure to use indeed. When winter comes, I can see this negikiri become the tool of choice for my sauerkraut projects.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1409480574.198145.jpg

The good things in life do not seem to come cheap these days, but I think I have found two masterpieces that will last me for decades to come. My other Watanabe knives are years old, and I have never had to do anything than some work on the waterstones to keep them sharp.

I hear amazing things about the shave and then I hear horrifying things about its aggressiveness.

Best/silvertip face lathering brush

Hello all.

Lately, I've been using only sticks rubbing them on face and using boar brushes to face lather. Works great, but I was thinking to add a nice badger brush to my rotation only for face lathering with sticks. I have a larger silvertip, which is not really suitable for the task.

So, what are your opinions on a good face lathering silvertip badger brush below 100 USD?

Lamb Oyster Cut Shoulder

I cooked a couple of Lamb Oyster cut shoulder for dinner tonight. I removed the shanks for another meal.

20140831_151707.jpg

Seasoned and slow roasted with Potatoes, small onions and kumara. It was just falling off the bone. Not sure why I don't see this cut. Guess the roast leg is king here. for the shoulder it is normally a full forequarter.

Will cook one on the BBQ soon, as it is the first day of spring tomorrow.

In the Office

I had to go up to my wife's office the other day, and mentioned to her that I was trading razor blades with someone through the BST (Hi Chris!). She gave me a weird look, and I explained the rough details of the trade, and her boss overheard me. He asked me what I was talking about, and I mentioned that I was trading safety razor blades over the internet.

He got curious, asking me if safety razors were the old-fashioned ones that used individual razor blades, etc, and I answered yes. They worked much better than cartridges, they are easier to recycle, and they are much, much cheaper. He was interested in that last bit, so I explained that a good blade could cost anywhere from fifteen cents, all the way up to the king's ransom of fifty cents. He asked if I had a pack of blades, which I did, and he was going to have his family mail him three safety razors from his dad and grandfather (the lucky so-and-so).

He was also interested in quality creams and soaps, but he did mention that he used a cream. I wasn't able to get the brand name from him, but I sent him links to WCS, and he told me the other day that he was ordering a tub of TOBS Avocado Cream. I hope he's getting a brush with it, but if he's not I have a couple of spares I can PIF him.

Which reminds me, I need to order another TGN knot for a restore....

WTB Short comb NEW or or just the head.

I am looking for a reasonable priced NEW with short comb or just the head. It does not need to be a showpiece, a decent user grade will do.

A GEM of a razor a GEM 1912 review.

Picked up a GEM 1912 Razor on eBay last week with a GEM Featherweight for about $11 shipped. So I tried the 1912 today on my two day old beard and here is what I thought. My first impression of this razor is that it looks kind of like a toy, the handle is so small it looks like a travel razor. I put in a new Carbon blade, used some shave oil, and C.O. Bigelow shave creme. As the razor came down my cheek I was surprised it was SO noisy you could hear every little whisker it shaved, and it felt so light in my hands and on my face I almost did not feel it there, but I sure could hear it. I got a three pass shave, and boy it was one of the best shaves I have ever had. BBS. after the three passes I splashed Clubman on my now very smooth face and felt an oh so light sting BUT for the rest of the day I could feel the wind on my face like I never could before. Then 7 hours later after work my face was still smooth. Now I believe it when people say shaving with an SE is like shaving with a straight. This GEM 1912 is a FINE razor. I recommend this razor to anyone who wants to try an SE blade. They can be found dirt cheap, and gives IMPRESSIVE shaves.

I can't compare this razor to much but this razor seems to be a bit more aggressive then my GEM Cloug Pruf, I guess my next review will be the GEM Feather weight.

Lapping film lifespan

So I'm starting to get into straights, and considering purchasing some lapping film. This seller on amazon sells sheets for a very reasonable price:

http://ift.tt/1qrD4Xq

A full set 12-9-5-3-1-.3 (of which I may not use all the sizes, but at a buck a pop why not) of 9x13" sheets will run $12 shipped since shipping is combined, which seems very reasonable. He also sells 6x6 diamond sheets at about $6/sheet, which would come out to a bit under $50 shipped.

So my question is, about how many hones will the AlOX sheets last vs diamond? Is there any reason to pick diamond over AlOX with these prices (with the area of each sheet also being larger, meaning more strips) other than sexiness?

First Time Honing a Near Wedge

This was my first honing of a near wedge. At first it was frustrating because I thought I could evenly wear the upper hone line and the blade edge. As I continued on I began to notice some lines where it appeared that it had been hone before but the lines where way up from the bottom and way down from the top on the blade surface. I did not use tape as I had read that it was better in the long run to take the extra time. Once I got over the fact that this was going to take time, and I got brave on removing steel good things began to happen. I was beginning to feel the blade edge getting sharper. I continued to progress through my stones and it happened I had an edge that would pass the HHT. I still need to make a set of scales before I can shave with it. So since this is my first attempt at a near wedge any comments to learn from are welcome.

First Time Honing a Near Wedge

Greetings from Jacksonville!

Hello all! Long time lurker but a new member here. Currently from Middleburg, FL but I'll be moving to Maryland in 2 months for work. I own an EJ89l, '38-'42 tech, '59 Super Speed, '61 Slim Adjustable, and a hand-me-down '58 Super Speed that was my Grandfather's. I've got a Parker Ivory Black badger brush, a VDH boar, and a TGN grade A silvertip with oliwood handle. As for lubricants, I prefer Williams soap in a dollar store mug, but also enjoy body shop macca, TOBS grapefruit, proraso green and red, and VDH Luxury soap. I enjoy pinaud clubman products afterwards.

Body Soap of the Day

Why not? There is one for everything else.

As one of our members astutely pointed out many of us don't rotate daily, so feel free to post your body soap of the week/month etc.

Geo F Trumper "Rose" hard soap

Long story short...I snagged a puck of Geo F Trumper rose shave soap. No matter what I've tried, the stuff will not lather. Using a bowl and brush, tried soaking the puck from 2-10 minutes prior. Just a thin and airy film resulted. It's like trying to shave with club soda.

I can lather the Fat like nobodies business, but this stuff is just impossible. Anyone else have this problem? Pointers?

Thanks!

Straight Razor Blank for a DIY project

I am looking for a straight razor blank for a custom straight razor project I am trying to make. I do not really want to have to do all the restoration work on the blade. I just want to do a custom pinning and scaling job on the blade. Does anyone know a good source for one? If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

How many passes do you go, and how long do your blades last?

I'm curious as to how many passes most folks on here go for their average shave. I either do 1 + touchup or a "1.5" pass where I make another pass doing everything except the chin/below chin/mustache areas. I just find more than that superfluous unless I go ATG, which my skin never particularly agrees with. I'll usually toss a blade after 5 uses, although I could probably go a bit longer. How about you guys?

*please don't cheat and report your SE blade lifespan. my latest GEM ran for 13 days before I chucked it just because I wanted to clean the razor

800th Message PIF

I'm doing a PIF for my 800th posting to this group.

I've only been an active member for only 48 days and I've already posted 800 replies to our forum. This is much better than when I was a lurker. Now it's much more fun replying to the various threads of this forum. Here's what I'm including in my PIF.

(1) Edwin Jagger DE89

(2) One Box of 5 Astra SP blades

(3) One Box of 5 Derby SS blades

(4) One Box of 5 Personna SS blades

I bought the EJ a less than a month ago and have used it less than half a dozen times. I don't really use this EJ anymore since I prefer shaving with my pre-war vintage tech or my EJ DE89L.

So there you have it! If you're interested in my PIF do add the comment, "I'm in" and you're on the list as a possible winner of this offering.

Next Thursday I'm going to use a random number generator to select the winner of the PIF. I'll contact the winner by PM for their mailing address.

Here's a photo of my PIF.

Hi! New To Wet Shaving and Badger And Blade

Andy from CA here. After a lifetime of multibladed razor shaves I got sick of paying $3.00 a blade and when a friend recommended Harry's I didn't know what I was in for. Harry's led to Dollar shave club which led to a google search on shaving, which led to YouTube videos on wet shaving which led to buying a Edwin Jagger 89lbl 5 weeks ago. When I got to ordering a vintage Gillette Tech (arrived today) I knew it was time to join a forum.

Thanks for all te info I've already obtained lurking. This seems a great group of guys.

Tradere SB arrived!

I've been searching for a Tradere SB for a while now.......finally found one and snatched it up. I'd post a pic, but I'm in the middle of my sanitizing routine at the moment. I can hardly wait for tomorrow morning's shave. :thumbup1:

Great Shave, but still irritated...

So I shaved with my new (to me) Shumate yesterday, while employing the lathering method you guys put together here, with a Proraso pre-shave and Stirling Sharp Dressed Man tallow soap. I finally "got it" ; good glide, excellent cushion, the razor cut through my beard like butter. Everything went great. I followed up with an alum block, which turned out to be unnecessary, and Captain's Choice Bay Rum aftershave. Thinking I did perfectly, I went on about my day.

The minute I walked outside, however, my neck broke out. It was still smooth, no bleeding, but the skin appeared to be quite irritated. Red blotches all over. So my question is- Is there anything I could have done to prevent this, or am I just a casualty of the environment? The 90 degree, high-humidity nature of St. Louis is unforgivable in the summer, but I can't recall whether or not my skin did this with m3 blades. I already use a cold water rinse to try to tighten the pores back up after the shave before the splash,.. I don't know. Any suggestions?

DE Razor Stand

This is a beautiful plexiglass stand for 12 razors that I ordered from an artisan from England. However, it's hardly been used as I became interested in straights and sold my DE's. Even SWMBO would find this beautiful stand an attractive addition to the bathroom, and would appreciate getting your razors off the countertop. It measures 8 1/2 x 5 x 5 inches. I'm asking $50, plus $10 shipping. Please PM me if interested.
