I found a local shop on Saturday that was carrying Musgo Real shaving products, and came home with a puck of the Musgo Real "Classic Scent" Shave Soap. I then preceded to read all the terrible reviews on B&B about how bad the soap was and how it was only suitable as a shower soap. Well, I'm a natural-born skeptic and had to see for myself.
I started out this morning my soaking my Omega 10049 Pro Boar Brush in a cup of hot water. I popped the Musgo puck into a recycled screw-top tin and filled that with hot water. I let them both soak and soften while I took my shower.
After the shower, I poured the water off the soap, shook out almost all the water from the brush, and proceeded to load the brush on the puck. I swirled the brush on the soap for about 60 seconds, or until I saw that the tips were pretty heavily loaded. I wet my face with hot water and started building lather on my face (I don't use a lather bowl). Within a few seconds, a smooth, thick lather started building. Once I had a fairly complete covering, I dipped the brush tips in water and returned to my face to finish. By the end of a minute, I had a smooth, thick, well-lubricated lather. I used a Gillette Milord razor with a Feather blade (3 or 4 shaves already on the blade) and had a very nice, smooth, cut-and-nick-free shave. There was plenty of lather on the brush for a second pass, and also to do a touch-up shave of my bald spot (which is becoming my predominant head feature!).
Honestly, I don't know what all the fuss was about. At least for me, the soap performed quite well, gave me a clean, irritation-free shave, and smells pleasant (a nice soapy, slightly spicy scent). I'm wondering if the negative reviews have been from bowl latherers? As far as face lathering goes, it works great for me! :thumbup1:
