Good evening gents, longtime lurker but just realized I never registered until now.
Transitioned to DE shaving about 4 months ago and it's been an absolute pleasure learning! After getting a sampler pack from West Coast Shaving I've settled on the Red Personnas as my favorite. I learned on the Merkur travel razor (didn't realize it was a travel razor until about a month of using it). I was gifted the very long handled Jack Black razor, and have started more or less using that one everyday, only because it is a full-sized one. I think the Merkur provides a much better shave, but I don't want to use a travel razor as my daily. Also the Jack Black's blue handle does not look very nice to me compared to all chrome.
A little about my daily routine: I shave daily after showering and have very sensitive skin around the neck. My beard is probably medium thickness - not sea-captain thick, but far away from peach fuzz. It may be a bit thicker than average (but I'm not sure, don't exactly have anything else to compare it to) but it never gets that long since I do shave daily. I use a brush by Baxter and hand lather with either C.O. Bigelow or Jack Black Triple. Pre-shave with Shave Secret (AMAZING stuff).
I'm looking to get another razor. It seems like the general consensus around here is I can't go wrong with the Merkur 34C. Tempting, although it kind of seems like it's only slightly heavier and slightly bigger than my Merkur travel. I'm also very interested in getting a TTO. I've spent countless amounts of time pouring through the amazon reviews on new TTO's and can't seem to pick one. I do want an all-metal one. Does anyone have any recommendations for a NEW solid TTO razor that is virtually indestructible and provides a great shave?
Alternatively, I was looking at a vintage razor as well. It seems like a Gillette Super Speed would be a good starting point for me, but I am completely overwhelmed with all the different types of super speeds, especially when I look on ebay. Apparently they are not all made differently. (I have also looked in BST but I am a new user and can't post a thread there) Are there certain years or decades to target/avoid? I also see many variations with handles and tips and the colors of those tips, etc. Any insight into the difference between these colors and handles and tips and which ones are desirable and which ones are to avoid would be very helpful. I would prefer an all-chrome one as to one with a plastic colored tip, because I think that looks fantastic, but if someone makes the case for a specific colored tip one, I'll listen.
