Gillette Fatboy Restauration.from Argentina!

Okay, so it took me a lot longer than I expected, but I finally got around to sitting down and writing this up.

First of all I'd like to say that this was the first DE I have ever bought and the one I chose (and found) to star wet shaving.

Here come the pics!!

Opinions wanted please.

Would you consider this a quality straight razor? Does anyone have one and could you please offer an honest review?

Many thanks in advance.

Orange vs Teal Derby 's

I found a 10 pack of Orange Derby's today for $1.50 at Sallys beauty supply store. Is there a difference between these and the Derby's in the Teal packing?

tips on finding cologne

i have been wanting to buy cologne for awhile but i'm not really sure as to how i should look for cologne. like how do you guys go about looking for some? i wouldn't want other things like my pomade clashing with it. im not even sure what kind of smell (like sandlewood for example) would fit me. i know fragrance is based on personal preference but i need some pointers to put me in the right direction. this stuff isn't cheap, at least the good stuff.

Should I?

Before you enablers immediately say, "Yes!", the last couple of days I have been using C.O. Bigelow shave cream, which I understand is the U.S. version of Proraso, and following up with Osage Rub as my after shave as they both have the menthol and eucalyptus thing going on. Should I get a bottle of Proraso After Shave, or is the Osage Rub good enough?

Please sell me on Polsilver SI's, Med Preps, Permasharps.

...as well as Voskhod, Personna Reds and any other of the "popular" blades I see coming up in the forums all the time.

I've tried a multitude of the more "inexpensive" blades and have definitely seen the difference between them. Currently, my top blade are (which I know a lot of people here think are overrated) Feathers. It's sharp, pretty smooth and I get a really good shave out of them. They are also on the cheaper side being about $26 on for 100. That being said, I'm curious why the above brands are mentioned so often on here.

I have no problem upgrading and trying something new, but I obviously don't want to commit to purchasing a full 100 pack before I find out if they're actually worth it. I've got a few of them coming from the Great Blade Exchange to try, but a lot of the MOST popular ones never seem to be in stock.

So if you have experience with and really like a certain blade, please tell me why. I've read a lot on the Safety razor review page, but again, it doesn't tell me why these blades are coming up time and time again here...especially when there are a lot of blades that rate HIGHER than those on there.

The first 100 pack I bought were Derbys, and while I can't say I sincerely regret the purchase (since they were only $7 at the time), I really, really do NOT enjoy them. I've also tried Dorco 301s, Gillete 7'oclock green, Gillete Super Platinums, Astra SPs, Personna Blue, Wilkonson Sword, Personna labs, Bic chrome, Bluebird, and Shark Super Chromes with the Sharks being my 2nd favorite.

I know now everyone's face/beard/taste is different, but I am truly curious about these brands.

And lastly, a member on another forum is selling Vintage Polisilvers (not SIs) at what I feel is a pretty steep price....can anyone chime in on these?

Thanks friends.

First reknotting

Really happy with what I accomplished. A friend gave me an Ever Ready C40 brush, he won it along with an old spice mug but didn't want the brush. It was missing most of the hairs, and the plastic was pretty dull. I pulled most of the hair out and milled the knot out using a dremel with cylinder shaped rasp bit. The knot came from Larry at Whipped Dog, he offered some great advice on the different loft settings and ways to fill the hollow cavity of the brush handle. The knot is a 22mm silver tip, the hole in the handle had to be enlarged to allow the lamp sized knot. Also have to thank blzrfn for the idea to use a hot glue gun to find the cavity and to adhere the knot into the handle, it feels pretty solid. The knot was set 15mm into the handle making the loft just at 50mm, which it is a bit shorter than the brush Larry made for me. I have used this brush a couple times already and am really pleased with how it lathers, I grown to like face lathering and the brush really does a great job, cannot wait for it to break in like my first brush from Larry.

Here it is with a Gillette New SC, and old spice cream and aftershave (first shave with the brush)

Here it is with a new 22mm silver tip that Larry at Whipped Dog made for me, black and silver marbled handle
